Privacy Statement — Justice & Health Learning Centre
The Community Advocacy & Legal Centre (CALC) is committed to protecting personal information by following responsible information-handling practices in keeping with privacy laws. This privacy statement applies to the Justice & Health Learning Centre (JHLC) website, operated by CALC.
Anonymous access
You can browse the JHLC website, including its course listings and educational content, without disclosing your personal information. As a general policy, we do not collect personal information from visitors who are simply browsing. The only personal information we collect is information you volunteer, such as:
- when you register for an account to track your course progress;
- when you give us feedback, ask a question, or complete a survey;
- when you give us your email address so we can send you information, such as a newsletter;
- when you sign up to receive social media updates.
We use and disclose non-identifying, statistical data to evaluate JHLC’s services.
Account registration and course tracking
If you create an account to track your progress through JHLC courses, we collect basic information such as your name, email address, name of your organization (if applicable) and password, along with your course activity (such as courses started, completed, and progress within a course). This information is used to:
- let you log in and resume your progress;
- maintain a record of your completed courses, where applicable;
- improve and develop JHLC’s course content based on how it is used.
You may update your account information at any time by logging in, or by contacting us at the email address below. If you no longer wish to maintain an account, you may request that it be deleted at any time (see “Your choices and rights,” below). Please note that revoking your consent may result in you not being able to access or utilize certain information, resources, tools, or services.
Subscription lists
When you subscribe to a mailing or email list from JHLC or CALC, such as a newsletter, you need to supply your name and an email or mailing address. These addresses are used to deliver messages to you, such as information about JHLC or CALC’s activities or projects. Your mail or email address will not be disclosed to any other mailing list subscriber, organization, website, or government agency. If you no longer want to receive these communications, you may unsubscribe at any time by emailing [contact@calc.clcj.ca].
Use of cookies
A cookie is a small text file containing a unique identification number that is transferred from a website to the hard drive of your computer, so the website can identify separate visitors and track activity on the site. A cookie will not give a website any personally identifiable information about you, such as your name or address.
The JHLC website uses cookies to keep you logged in while you complete a course, to remember your progress between visits, and to track how many people visit the site and how frequently each page is visited. Visitors who wish to opt out of cookies should review the help feature of their browser software. Note that declining cookies may prevent course progress tracking from working correctly, and may otherwise adversely impact site performance.
Google Analytics
JHLC uses Google Analytics to track website performance, including the performance of promotional links to our site. Google Analytics uses persistent cookies to track visitor sessions, visitors across multiple sessions, and referral sources to our website.
At no time is personally identifiable information passed to Google Analytics. Note that Google Analytics stores its data within the United States and is subject to US laws. Those wishing to opt out of Google Analytics data collection should use the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Service providers
Information you provide is hosted and processed by our website hosting provider and learning management plugin provider as part of operating the site. We require that any service provider handling personal information on our behalf protect it consistently with this privacy statement and use it only to provide services to JHLC.
Links on our website
The JHLC website provides links to other websites and resources. CALC assumes no responsibility for the information practices of sites you are able to access through our site. We encourage visitors to review each site’s privacy policy before disclosing any personal information.
Confidentiality and security
CALC maintains physical, electronic, and administrative safeguards appropriate to the type of personal information we obtain from you. CALC staff and volunteers who have access to personal data are required to respect the confidentiality of personal information and handle it responsibly.
As a community legal clinic, information you provide to CALC in connection with legal services is confidential. The only exceptions are if information shows a likelihood of serious harm to you or others, or, if we are providing you with a service, if we receive a request from Legal Aid Ontario (our funder) for financial information showing that you qualify for our services. This exception does not apply to general account or course-tracking information collected through the JHLC website, which is not legal service information.
If you have a complaint or concern about our information-handling practices, we encourage you to let us know at [contact@calc.clcj.ca].
Information sharing
We do not share or sell the personal information we collect. We will not disclose your personal information to anyone else without your prior knowledge or consent, except as described in “Service providers” above, or unless that personal information discloses a likelihood of serious harm to you or someone else.
Data retention
We retain account and course progress information for as long as your account remains active. You may request that your account and associated personal information be deleted at any time by contacting us at [contact@calc.clcj.ca]; we will action deletion requests within a reasonable time. Subscription list information is kept until you unsubscribe or otherwise withdraw consent.
Your choices and rights
You may, at any time:
- ask what personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct inaccurate information;
- ask us to delete your account and associated personal information;
