About us

The Justice & Health Learning Centre offers free training modules, case studies, and resources for healthcare providers in Ontario interested in learning about legal health, how legal health interacts with the social determinants of health and health equity, and how healthcare providers can help patients to access timely and appropriate legal help that will improve their overall health.

The social determinants of health are the non-medical factors that have an influence over health outcomes – things like income, housing, job security, social inclusion, and discrimination – that make up the environments where people live, learn, work, and play. The social determinants of health and legal problems are two sides of the same coin, and the way we discuss and think about these problems is important. By solving legal problems, we can improve the related social determinants of health, which in turn can improve overall health and health equity.

Learning topics available now include an introduction to legal health, how to identify health-harming legal needs, how to make timely and appropriate referrals for legal help, how to navigate the Legal Aid system, best practices for completing Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) forms, and more.

The materials on our site are designed to be used by healthcare providers in any field of practice across Ontario.

The development of the Justice & Health Learning Centre was made possible by a grant from the Law Foundation of Ontario, and we thank the Law Foundation of Ontario for their support. All materials on this site were created by the Community Advocacy & Legal Centre working in partnership with legal and healthcare professionals in our community and beyond.
